Candidate Requirements

In order for your application to be accepted, you must include electronic copies of the following required documents: For your application to be accepted, you must also provide proof that you have attained certification as an Emergency Medical Technician either through the State of Arkansas Department of Health or through the National Emergency Medical Technician Registry Program or possess one of the following prior to applying:

  1. Medical certification or license at a higher level (paramedic, nurse, etc.)
  2. 12 college credit hours in core curriculum courses (English, Math, Science, Communications, Speech, Journalism or Foreign Language)
  3. Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification through IFSAC
  4. Accredited Fire Academy certification (NFPA, Pro-Board, etc.)
  5. A minimum of two years honorable service in the US Armed Forces including National Guard.


By completing the application process outlined above, you have completed the City of Fayetteville’s employment application for Firefighter. You must also take and pass an entry-level FireTEAM test through the National Testing Center and a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) in order to move forward in the selection process.

The National Testing Network is contracted with the City of Fayetteville to provide professional test administration services. NTN provides access to lists of prescreened candidates ready for further processing and employment consideration. Application Process

Following the application deadline, the Fire Department will complete a review of the employment applications and the required documentation to ensure candidates meet all requirements. Within four weeks of the application deadline, candidates who are eligible to continue in the process will be contacted by the Fire Department. At this stage, candidates will be required to provide current, valid proof of passing the CPAT. Only a CPAT licensed by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) will be accepted. Eligible candidates will be scheduled for the final phase of the application process, consisting of a panel interview with members of the Fire Department, and a panel interview with the Civil Service Commission.
